How to Prepare Your Car for a Professional Detail

Booking your car in for a professional detail is a worthwhile investment — but there are a few simple things you can do beforehand that make the whole process smoother and ensure your detailer can give the paintwork their full attention. None of this is complicated, and it takes very little time on your part.

Remove Personal Belongings

Clear out any personal items from the interior — bags, loose change, charging cables, child seats if you're having an interior detail. This lets your detailer access every surface without moving your belongings around, and it means nothing gets lost or accidentally moved during the clean.

Don't Wash the Car Immediately Before

It feels counterintuitive, but there's no need to wash the car before dropping it off. In fact, if you wash it yourself using a poor technique — a dirty bucket, an old sponge, or a drive-through machine — you risk adding fresh swirl marks right before a paint correction. Your detailer will carry out a proper decontamination wash as the first step of the process. Arrive with the car as it naturally is.

Make a Note of Any Specific Concerns

If there are particular areas you're worried about — a kerb scuff on a rear bumper, a stubborn tar spot on the sill, a deep scratch on the bonnet — let your detailer know at drop-off. This helps them prioritise during the inspection and means you'll get an honest assessment of what is and isn't fixable by polishing alone.

Plan Around the Timescales

A quality detail takes time. At Detailing Scotland, our services range from two days (Enhancement Detail, Motorcycle Detail, New Car Detail) through to five days or more for a Wet Sand Detail or Self Heal Plus. Make sure you have alternative transport arranged for the duration. The time investment is what separates a genuine result from a hasty valet.

Confirm the Detail Package

Before drop-off, confirm which package you've booked and what's included. At Detailing Scotland, every package includes FEYNLAB ceramic coating as standard, so there's no upselling on the day. A £75 non-refundable deposit secures your slot at booking, with the remainder due on collection.
