What is dry ice blasting?

Dry ice blasting uses compressed air to accelerate tiny pellets of solid CO2 (dry ice) at high velocity onto a surface. When the pellets hit, they sublimate instantly — turning from solid directly to gas — and the rapid temperature change (-78°C) combined with the kinetic impact removes contaminants, rust, underseal, grease, road grime, and oxidation from metal surfaces. Because the dry ice turns to gas on contact, it leaves no secondary waste product — only the dislodged contaminants, which are vacuumed away. The process does not abrade or damage the underlying metal.

What is dry ice blasting used for on vehicles?

At Detailing Scotland, dry ice blasting is primarily used to prepare vehicle undersides for our 10-Year Underside Protection service. For older or higher-mileage vehicles, the underside is first dry ice blasted to strip years of road grime, old underseal, and contamination down to clean bare metal — creating the ideal bonding surface for a FEYNLAB Industrial V2 ceramic coating. This coating then provides 10 years of protection against corrosion, salt, and road debris.
