What Is Dry Ice Blasting and Is It Worth It?
Dry ice blasting is one of the most effective surface cleaning methods available — and it is still relatively unknown outside specialist detailing and industrial maintenance circles. If you have heard the term and want to know what it actually involves, how it differs from pressure washing, and whether it is worth it for your vehicle, here is an honest and comprehensive guide.
How Does Dry Ice Blasting Work?
Dry ice blasting uses compressed air to propel frozen CO2 pellets (dry ice) at a surface at high velocity. On impact, three things happen simultaneously: the kinetic energy of the pellet dislodges surface contaminants; the temperature of the dry ice (approximately -79°C) causes a micro-thermal shock that breaks the bond between the contaminant and the substrate; and the CO2 sublimes instantly — converting directly from solid to gas — eliminating any secondary waste or moisture.
The result is a surface stripped of rust, oil, grease, road salt, underbody sealant, old paint, and decades of accumulated contamination — without leaving the substrate wet, without any chemical residue, and without damage to rubber, wiring, or delicate components if handled correctly by an experienced operator.
How Does It Compare to Pressure Washing?
Dry ice leaves no moisture — water ingress into cavities is a constant risk with high-pressure water washing, particularly in older vehicles with compromised sealing. Dry ice eliminates this risk.
Dry ice leaves no residue — pressure washing displaces contaminants and pushes them elsewhere, or requires secondary chemical treatment. Dry ice simply removes them.
Dry ice is gentler on substrates — used correctly, it will not damage rubbers, seals, wiring, or thin metal. High-pressure water can force its way into areas that should stay dry.
Dry ice is more thorough — because the thermal shock breaks the molecular bond between contaminant and surface, dry ice removes contamination that pressure washing cannot shift.

Is It Worth It?
For a vehicle you intend to keep, absolutely.
